J.M.W. TURNER
I'll start with a personal favourite, The Piazzetta, Venice by J.M.W. Turner.
This was the first painting that I actually took a genuine interest in. A fair few years ago, my family went to the Scottish National Gallery during the one month a year when they have their collection of Turners on display. This was my first exposure to him, and something about his use of colour and the blurred look of his work intrigued me. This one especially captured me; the lightning striking the column, the faded crowd, the Palazzo Ducale emerging from the foggy blue and the barest hint of San Marco. There's a real sense of this fantastic scene in a fantastic city, looming out from the mists of history, and that Turner has captured something magical and, to me, absolutely spellbinding.
